The 7 Best Movies New to Netflix in May 2018

Bridge to Teribithia

Do you ever feel like you don’t spend enough time crying alone on your couch? Well, have we got the movie for you! Adapted from Katherine Paterson’s beloved YA novel of the same name, Gábor Csupó’s devastating (and deceptively upbeat) adventure tells the story of two struggling 12-year-olds who invent a magical world for themselves because the real one is too upsetting. The friendship that forms between tiny Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb when they cross the “Bridge to Terabithia” is earned and alive in a genre where such bonds are often taken for granted, and the enchanted kingdom they invent for themselves is instantly familiar to anyone who grew up with an overactive imagination and a frequent need to use it. And then… the sad part. It may be a bit predictable to older viewers, but the film’s third act twist stings every time, and Csupó’s refusal to ease the pain only makes the rest of the movie feel that much sweeter.

Available to stream May 19th.

Future Man Season 2 Release Date Possibilities and More

With the announcement that Future Man season 2 would indeed be happening, Hulu has given fans reassurance that the many unresolved questions left unanswered in the season 1 finale will be able to see a possible resolution and further development. Hulu made the announcement of the show’s renewal at the TCA Winter Press Tour in January.

The time travel comedy from creators Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter of Sausage Party fame followed the hapless janitor, Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson), as he attempted to fulfull his destiny as the savior of the future in a surprisingly complex mission that involves changing the past. With the fate of his guides from the future, Wolf and Tiger (Derek Wilson and Eliza Coupe), hanging in the balance, the renewal was welcome news to fans who have enjoyed the irreverent style of the adventure series.

Shaffir acknowledges that Hulu has totally been behind Future Man as they’ve supported the writers’ vision of an over-the-top comedy mixed with elements of science fiction and pop culture. “I don’t think there was a single thing that I can recall where they heard an idea and they said that it was over the line or too much for them,” Shaffir said of the streaming network in an earlier interview with Den of Geek. “If anything, they pushed us to be as daring as we wanted to be, so Hulu was fantastic.”

Future Man is produced by showrunner Ben Karlin along with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, whose brand of cinematic humor has lent itself well to television, as evidenced by the season two renewal.

Future Man Season 2 Release Date
Although no specific release date has been announced for Future Man season 2, all signs point to a late 2018, early 2019 winter premiere.

Cannes First Look: Josh Hutcherson Goes for the ‘Burn’

Josh Hutcherson is armed, dangerous and in dire need of a wash in this first-look still from Burn.

The twist-filled thriller, formerly called Plume and the feature debut from writer-director Mike Gan, also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Hotel Mumbai) and Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation).

The film, from Film Mode Entertainment and Yale Production, is produced by Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman, Sukee Chew, Russ Posternak, Ash Christian and Michael J. Rothstein.

Filmed in the idyllic Hudson Valley, Burn follows lonely, unstable gas station attendant Melinda (Cobham-Hervey) who constantly feels overshadowed by her more outgoing co-worker Sheila (Waterhouse). When the gas station they work at is held at gunpoint by Billy (Hutcherson), a desperate man in need of quick cash, the heist goes terribly wrong and Melinda comes up with a way to make a connection with the robber, regardless of who gets hurt.

Film Mode Entertainment is handling international sales in Cannes. CAA is repping for North American distribution.

On the Set of ‘Future Man’ as Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson Push the Limits With Hulu’s Comedy
Filed in Future Man Josh News Television

On the Set of ‘Future Man’ as Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson Push the Limits With Hulu’s Comedy

“This show, to me, there’s nothing like it,” says Hutcherson, who serves as executive producer of the series, which marked the streaming service’s biggest original launch following its Emmys triumph with ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’

On a warm spring morning last year on the Sony lot in Culver City, the most distinct sound on the Future Man set is laughter. And not just any laughter, but the signature chuckle that comedy fans recognize as belonging to actor-writer-producer-director Seth Rogen.

The cause of the hilarity? He’s discussing a scene involving an imaginary machine called an “electro-ejaculation device” from which a (fake) dead possum hangs. No, really. “I didn’t know possums have bifurcated penises,” Rogen says as his unmistakable laugh breaks through once again.

Speaking with THR later in the day, he’s quick to reassure this reporter that “it’s not all this gross” on the set of Hulu’s freshman comedy series. “This is definitely the grossest things we’ve done,” adds Rogen’s longtime producing partner, Evan Goldberg (they run Point Grey Pictures together). “There’s a lot more to this show.”

It’s, ahem, a unique discussion topic for a unique series. The half-hour show, created by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, centers on Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson), a janitor by day, gamer by night whose world is turned upside down by two visitors sent from the future (Happy Endings’ Eliza Coupe and Preacher’s Derek Wilson) to inform him that he’s humanity’s last hope. The result is an effects-heavy time-travel comedy that jumps between big action sequences and fart jokes.

“This show, to me, there’s nothing like it,” says Hutcherson, who also serves as a producer on the series. Future Man marks not only the Hunger Games star’s first TV series but also one of his first comedic roles after a small part in the James Franco starrer The Disaster Artist, which Rogen produced and starred in.

Future Man’s combination of genres and tones makes Rogen and Goldberg’s involvement that much more crucial. In addition to executive producing, they co-directed the pilot as well as several other early episodes to set the tone for the series, which debuted Nov. 14 on Hulu (and was renewed in January for a second season of 13 episodes).

“Seth really knows what he wants, and he’s very precise about it,” says Coupe. “Even when we go through rehearsals, he knows exactly where he wants the camera to be. He knows how he wants it to look, he knows exactly what he’s doing.”

Which is why Rogen’s laughter holds so much weight on set. “Anytime you’re shooting a scene and you hear Seth’s laugh coming from video village, you’re like, ‘All right, this is working,’” says Hutcherson. “In between setups, you can just hear everyone on video village laughing and enjoying themselves.”

The 13-episode first season represents somewhat of a new chapter for Hulu’s comedy brand after the streamer closed the books on half-hours like The Mindy Project and Casual. Future Man also marked one of Hulu’s biggest original series launches since the company’s Emmy triumph with The Handmaid’s Tale, when it became the first streamer to take home the best original series trophy, in addition to seven other awards.

“Hulu’s the perfect fit because I think they take a lot of risks,” says Coupe, who recurred on Casual before signing on to Future Man.

Back on the set, Rogen and Goldberg watch a scene from video village involving the electro-ejaculation machine. As the camera pans up and down on the dead possum in the middle of the machine, Rogen yells in disgust. It might not be a laugh, but on Future Man, this reaction might also equal a nod of approval. A producer yells a warning on set: “It’s going to get messy.”

They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Josh makes his directorial debut for High and Low

The Hunger Games star made his music video directorial debut on Friday with the release of “High & Low”—a new single by electronic music duo West Coast Massive and singer Brayton Bowman. The video plays back a woman’s night out in reverse. So, it starts with her in the water at a beach party, and it ends with the text message she received inviting her to go out.

As for how he became involved in the project, Hutcherson said his younger brother, Connor, manages West Coast Massive and that he’s actually a friend of the group members.

“They sent over their new EP,” he said. “And when I heard ‘High & Low,’ I thought it had a lot of potential to become a hit song, as well as a great music video. The lyrics combined with the melodies felt very cinematic to me, so I wrote out a treatment idea for the video. About three weeks later, we were on the ground making it.”

Still, taking on a directorial role comes with its own share of challenges.

“The hardest part about getting behind the camera is that almost all the creative decisions that need to be made are ultimately your responsibility…deciding which ideas are good and which aren’t,” the Peeta Mellark star said. “You are responsible for executing the idea and rolling with the punches. We were lucky and had a top-notch team but still…the pressure can be tough. But I really love it.”

In fact, it looks like he’s caught the directing bug.

“I’m looking at few different directing projects right now,” he said. “[Not] TV for now, just features. I’m completely hooked by directing. Growing up in this business and seeing all that goes into creating something has driven me to want to create my own. I loved getting to work on this video, and I’d be down for more music videos, as well. They’ve really made a comeback in recent years, and it’s a great place to test out ideas and push the boundaries.”

Future Man debuted its Season 2 premiere at New York Comic Con

fter debuting in November 2017, the Hulu original series Future Man is ready to return and, somehow, get even weirder the second time around. The cast and creative crew of the series came to New York Comic Con 2018 to give fans the first look at the new season, including the world premiere of the first new episode of the show.

Rather quickly, it becomes apparent that the future Josh Futterman (Josh Hutcherson) thought he saved in Season 1 is somehow even worse off. Now he’s expected to once again save the world with little more skills than being good at video games. Now, though, Futterman has the experience to actually change the timeline… maybe. In the meantime, he will urinate on himself, be constantly humiliated, and simply attempt not to die in horrible ways.

After the Season 2 premiere episode was shown, the first trailer for the new episodes was revealed, giving even more of an idea of what’s to come. In the new and terrible future, Wolf (Derek Wilson) is married to five people as they raise a child together–which is played as being completely normal in whatever version of reality they’ve ended up in–while Tiger’s (Eliza Coupe) status as a biotic, which was revealed in the Season 1 finale, is going to cause quite a strain on the team. Fans will also be introduced to other Tiger biotics with a variety of personalities, which should prove very entertaining. Additionally, Coupe said in the panel that “my voice is different,” when it comes to the alternate Tigers, including one that is rather high-pitched.

The main drive of the new season sees the future divided between two groups, one of which wants to relocate half of the future’s population to Mars. The other group, meanwhile, simply wants to be left alone. As this is all happening, a group called the Pointed Circle is plotting some kind of attack, which uses Futterman in some kind of key way that will definitely kill him. Unsurprisingly, he’s on the run because of this.

Future Man Season 2 Feels Like Waterworld and Mad Max

During New York Comic Con 2018, we spoke with Josh Hutcherson about season 2 of Future Man and learned more about some of the show’s unique influences, what movies it borrows from, and what this universe’s version of the future looks and feels like. In season 2, Josh, Tiger, and Wolf are thrust into the year 2162, where society is broken down into two factions: the Mons (“the haves”) and the Nags (“the have nots”), which borrows a stylistically demented vision of the future from movies like Mad Max and Waterworld. Hutcherson said, “There’s a bit of a Waterworld kind of element to it in the Nag. And Mad Max is one that we kind of used a lot in the Nag world. It’s very dirty and dusty and you feel like there’s no water.” He then added that Josh and Wolf are stuck in this society, and, incidentally, “Wolf has found his new home inside the Nag with this cluster family with, like, six husbands and wives; and there’s great satire and political commentary threaded throughout.”

Season 2 of Future Man will be available for streaming on Hulu in 2019.

Josh at the On the Record in Las Vegas

Josh attended the opening of On the Record in Las Vegas. On the Record features a number of the cool kitschy hallmarks for which the Houstons are known, including a speakeasy-style entrance, a secret room known as the Vinyl Parlor — where mixologists from coast-to-coast serve as “Bartenders-in-Residence” concocting song-inspired cocktails — and three karaoke rooms which have fast become the spot for stars, including Jeremy Renner and Dave Grohl, to hang out and cut loose.

The Hunger Games’ Hutcherson also showed up, despite being in a cast. Earlier in the evening (along with Arquette, Hirsch and Wesley), he joined Park MGM players at the resort’s Juniper Cocktail Lounge for the NoMad 500 Celebrity Poker Invitational, and then hit the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the WBA world welterweight title fight.

“Every time I go out [in L.A.], I go to [the Houstons’ places]. I like Madame Siam and Break Room 86,” said Hutcherson. “[On the Record reminds] me of that. The Rolls Royce DJ booth is amazing. The double-decker bus [on the patio is] crazy. The sound is really good. What’s crazy to me is you can go from one room to the next and hear [the music] distinctly.”

Josh Hutcherson Dunks On ‘Overwatch’ Console Players

If you’re a console player, you’ll know PC gamers love dunking on you. They just can’t help it. It’s a hereditary thing.

That said, the disrespect has never been as great as it was this Thursday during an Overwatch League stream when Hunger Games and Polar Express actor Josh Hutcherson capitalized an easy opportunity to roast console Overwatch players.

If you follow Hutcherson, you’ll know he’s a pretty big Overwatch fan, like many of us. And during a recent Overwatch League Stream, he was invited on stage to talk about the game, but rather than reveal who his main is or who he is rooting for in Overwatch League, he decided to tap into the oldest war known to man: PC overlords vs console peasants.

More specfically, during halftime of the Los Angeles Valiant and Philadelphia Fusion match on Thursday, host Malik Forte at one point asked Hutcherson who on stage, including Forte, would be able to save the world on the back of their video game skill.

“Well… you play console,” said Hutcherson savagely. Of course this prompted the crowd to erupt in laughter and variant noises that translate to “oh damn.” “You like tickling the sticks,” Hutcherson then added. Of course, Forte was caught off guard by the playful dunk as much as the crowd was.

Overwatch is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. At the moment of publishing, there’s been no word of a Nintendo Switch port, which looks very unlikely at this point, even if it hasn’t been completely ruled out yet.

Future Man Renewed for Third and Final Season at Hulu

Hulu has renewed “Future Man” for a third season, which will also be the show’s last.

The final season will consist of just eight episodes, while the first two were both 13. The series is led by “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson as a janitor and world-ranked gamer who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humanity after mysterious visitors from the future proclaim him the key to defeating the imminent super-race invasion.

It also stars Eliza Coupe and Derek Wilson. It was created, written, and executive produced by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir and executive produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Matt Tolmach, James Weaver and Ben Karlin.

This marks the second time in as many days that a Rogen-Goldberg show has set its final season. On Monday, it was announced that the AMC series “Preacher,” which Rogen and Goldberg developed for television along with Sam Catlin, would end after its upcoming fourth season. The impending end of both shows comes after it was announced that Rogan and Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures would move from their longtime home at Sony to Lionsgate.

Point Grey’s other TV projects currently include the upcoming Amazon superhero series “The Boys” and the Showtime series “Black Monday,” which aired its first season finale on March 31.

In two weeks, the film 57 Seconds starring Oscar winner Morgan Freeman and the Hunger Game’s Josh Hutcherson will begin filming in Lafayette. President of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority Mandi Mitchell says it’s based on E. C. Tubb’s science fiction work Fallen Angel.

“And it’s a time travel thriller, and it’s going to focus on how technology requires us to look at questions of ethics and morality,” said Mitchell.

The production will shoot in multiple locations in Lafayette including the Cajun Dome and is expected to spend $8.5 million in the city and create 500 jobs. Mitchell says $2.7 million will go towards payroll.

“We are working very hard to ensure that it’s our own Lafayette citizens and citizens from the surrounding area and talent that we have here from years of other film productions,” said Mitchell.

Liev Schreiber and Josh Hutcherson will star in the film, which will release exclusively in theaters in the fall. News of the sale was announced at the Cannes Film Festival.

Paula Ortiz (“The Bride”) directed “Across the River and Into the Trees,” which takes place in post-WWII Italy. Schreiber plays American Army Colonel Richard Cantwell, a bona fide hero who remains haunted by the war. As he faces news of illness with stoic disregard, he’s determined to spend a week in quiet solitude and commandeers a military driver to facilitate a visit to his old haunts in Venice. As Cantwell’s plans begin to unravel, a chance encounter with a remarkable young woman begins to rekindle in him the hope of renewal.
