Hulu’s 2018 Emmy FYC mailer features new programs like ‘The Looming Tower,’ ‘Future Man’

A trio of comedy series — “Future Man,” “Casual,” “The Mindy Project” — are hoping to hear their names called on Emmy nominations morning. While “Casual” and “The Mindy Project” have contended before at the Emmys, this is the first time at bat for the unlikely superhero series “Future Man,” starring Josh Hutcherson as a dead-end janitor who must save the world. Emmy winner Sarah Silverman‘s travelogue series “I Love You, America” rounds out Hulu’s second box set.

Cannes First Look: Josh Hutcherson Goes for the ‘Burn’

Josh Hutcherson is armed, dangerous and in dire need of a wash in this first-look still from Burn.

The twist-filled thriller, formerly called Plume and the feature debut from writer-director Mike Gan, also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Hotel Mumbai) and Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation).

The film, from Film Mode Entertainment and Yale Production, is produced by Jordan Yale Levine, Jordan Beckerman, Sukee Chew, Russ Posternak, Ash Christian and Michael J. Rothstein.

Filmed in the idyllic Hudson Valley, Burn follows lonely, unstable gas station attendant Melinda (Cobham-Hervey) who constantly feels overshadowed by her more outgoing co-worker Sheila (Waterhouse). When the gas station they work at is held at gunpoint by Billy (Hutcherson), a desperate man in need of quick cash, the heist goes terribly wrong and Melinda comes up with a way to make a connection with the robber, regardless of who gets hurt.

Film Mode Entertainment is handling international sales in Cannes. CAA is repping for North American distribution.

Future Man Season 2 Release Date Possibilities and More

With the announcement that Future Man season 2 would indeed be happening, Hulu has given fans reassurance that the many unresolved questions left unanswered in the season 1 finale will be able to see a possible resolution and further development. Hulu made the announcement of the show’s renewal at the TCA Winter Press Tour in January.

The time travel comedy from creators Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter of Sausage Party fame followed the hapless janitor, Josh Futturman (Josh Hutcherson), as he attempted to fulfull his destiny as the savior of the future in a surprisingly complex mission that involves changing the past. With the fate of his guides from the future, Wolf and Tiger (Derek Wilson and Eliza Coupe), hanging in the balance, the renewal was welcome news to fans who have enjoyed the irreverent style of the adventure series.

Shaffir acknowledges that Hulu has totally been behind Future Man as they’ve supported the writers’ vision of an over-the-top comedy mixed with elements of science fiction and pop culture. “I don’t think there was a single thing that I can recall where they heard an idea and they said that it was over the line or too much for them,” Shaffir said of the streaming network in an earlier interview with Den of Geek. “If anything, they pushed us to be as daring as we wanted to be, so Hulu was fantastic.”

Future Man is produced by showrunner Ben Karlin along with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, whose brand of cinematic humor has lent itself well to television, as evidenced by the season two renewal.

Future Man Season 2 Release Date
Although no specific release date has been announced for Future Man season 2, all signs point to a late 2018, early 2019 winter premiere.

The 7 Best Movies New to Netflix in May 2018

Bridge to Teribithia

Do you ever feel like you don’t spend enough time crying alone on your couch? Well, have we got the movie for you! Adapted from Katherine Paterson’s beloved YA novel of the same name, Gábor Csupó’s devastating (and deceptively upbeat) adventure tells the story of two struggling 12-year-olds who invent a magical world for themselves because the real one is too upsetting. The friendship that forms between tiny Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb when they cross the “Bridge to Terabithia” is earned and alive in a genre where such bonds are often taken for granted, and the enchanted kingdom they invent for themselves is instantly familiar to anyone who grew up with an overactive imagination and a frequent need to use it. And then… the sad part. It may be a bit predictable to older viewers, but the film’s third act twist stings every time, and Csupó’s refusal to ease the pain only makes the rest of the movie feel that much sweeter.

Available to stream May 19th.
